Reactions of metals with steam

Not all metals react with Steam.

Some metals like Aluminium, Zinc ,Iron(In red-hot condition) react with steam.

So,

Al + H2O(g) ——→ Al2O3 + H2(g)

Zn + H2O(g) ——→ ZnO + H2(g)

Fe + H2O(g) ——→ Fe2O3 + H2(g)

Hope this will help you.

Magnesium reacts very slowly with water. However, it reacts vigorously with steam:

magnesium + steam → magnesium oxide + hydrogen

Mg(s) + H2O(g) → MgO(s) + H2(g)

Metals which react with steam form the solid metal oxide and hydrogen gas.

In general, the more reactive the metal, the more rapid the reaction. Aluminium is unusual, because it is a reactive metal that does not react with water.

Explanation:

As Mg(oh)2 is produced and is insoluble.

As al2o3 is produced and is insoluble.
