Magnesium burns in air with a bright light. The change is chemical and magnesium turns into magnesium oxide (residue) which falls down as a white powder. On putting this residue into some water and dipping the red litmus inside it, the red litmus turns blue indicating the presence of a base (MgO)

2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO
