When Magnesium ribbon burns in presence of oxygen, we could observe a dazzling white flame and a white substance is formed which is magnesium oxide. The reaction is a combination reaction.

When we burn any substance in the presence of atmospheric oxygen,an oxidation happens and generally an oxide substance is generated.

Similarly when we burn the magnesium in the atmospheric oxygen,a white coloured substance is generated which is known as the magnesium oxide.

The chemical equation of this reaction is ;

2Mg+O2= 2MgO [white]
