The mesosphere is 22 miles (35 kilometers) thick. The mesosphere  contains higher percentages of ozone than the lower levels. As ozone protects us from the harmful UV rays from the sun that cause cancer as well as kills plants and animals. Therefore, if the mesosphere is absent these UV rays will directly hit the earth making it difficult for life to thrive on Earth.

So mesosphere is one of the most essential layers of the atmosphere that allows life to thrive on Earth.

The air is still thin, so you wouldn't be able to breathe up in the mesosphere. ... The meteors make it through the exosphere and thermosphere without much trouble because those layers don't have much air. But when they hit the mesosphere, there are enough gases to cause friction and create heat.
