Most reactive metals like Sodim and potassium the react with oxygen as soon as they come in contact of air. Other react when they are burnt i.e., during their combustion they reacts with oxygento form their metallic oxide which is basic in nature. Like Magnesium (in ribbons) are burnt in air to form MgO.
2Mg + O2 = 2MgO
Non-metals react with oxygen in the air to produce non-metal oxides. Here are two examples for the non-metals carbon and sulphur. Non-metaloxides such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are responsible for acid rain. They dissolve in the water in the clouds to form acidic solutions.
