When metal are treated with the mineral acids hydrogen gas is liberate but when metal react with hno3 do not liberate h2 .Why ?

when metal is treated with acid like hcl they usually give h2 gas but in the case of hno3, it does not liberate h2 gas because it get oxidized to form no2 but it can produce h2 gas, when it's 99% diluted solution reacts with magnesium or magnese in that case only it can produce h2 gas .
