I don’t know if “allowed” is the correct term. I guess you’d say they “forced” me and my other sister to raise my youngest sister.

I was twelve when she was born. My other sister was eleven. And when the youngest sister came along, the middle sister and I had to grow up in a hurry.

We were no longer allowed to go over to friends’ houses or to take part in after school activities. We had to come straight home and give my mom “a break” from taking care of her own baby.

We did grow attached to her, and she got pretty attached to us. In fact, she grew up believing that WE were actually her two mothers (she called us both Mommy), and she referred to our actual mother by her first name.

But we weren’t equipped to be raising a child. We both felt resentful at times. And we obviously didn’t do a lot of things right. But what can you expect?
