Solution:

number of selections of selecting r items from n items

= {^n}C_r

{^n}C_r =  \dfrac{n!}{r!(n-r)!}

n = 8

r = 3

Hence

{^8}C_3 =  \dfrac{8!}{3!(8-3)!}

 \implies {^8}C_3 =  \dfrac{8!}{3!5!}

 \implies {^8}C_3 =  \dfrac{8.7.6.5!}{3!5!}

 \implies {^8}C_3 =  \dfrac{8.7.6}{3!}

\implies {^8}C_3 =  \dfrac{8.7.6}{6}

\implies {^8}C_3 =  8.7

\implies {^8}C_3 =  56

⁸C₃ = 56

number of selection  = 56
