It doesn't becomes neutral...

it's a metal thus after gaining electrons it positively charges.

We can say that NaCL(common salt) is a neutral

Because Na has 9 electrons in its valence shell. ( atm no. = 11 ), so by donating 1 electron, it has 8 electrons left in its valence shell and hence its octet is also complete which increases its stability.
