  • When NaCl dissolves in water, aqueous Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions result. The force of attraction that exists between Na⁺ and H₂O is called 'Ion-Dipole' interaction.
  • Water is made up of H⁺ and OH⁻ ions. Since it has 2 polarities, ⁺ve and ⁻ve, It is called 'Di-Pole.'
  • Since the ⁺ve and ⁻ve polarities of water cancel each other, Water becomes a 'Non-Polar' molecule.
  • When a ⁺ve ion/charged ion interacts with a 'Non-Polar' molecule, ⁺ve ion/charged ion causes a distortion (disturbance from its original state) in the polarity of Water, causing Water to break-up into H⁺ and OH⁻ ions temporarily.
  • Na⁺ ions move towards the OH⁻ ions to get bonded and such a reactions is called 'Ion-Dipole' Interaction.
