K₂Cr₂O₇ + 4NaCl + 3H₂SO₄ ---------> 2CrO₂Cl₂  + K₂SO₄ + 2NaSO₄ + 3H₂O

When NaCl is heated with K₂Cr₂O₇ in Sulphuric acid the Chloride in the NaCl reacts with the Chromium in the K₂Cr₂O₇ to form Chromyl Chloride vapours which is a brown colour gas .

It can also be used as a confirmatory test for Chloride
