Non metals do not react with water as non metals cannot give electrons to reduce the hydrogen ions of water into hydrogen gas.

So, when non metals react with water they do not react because all non metals are low in reactivity as compared to hydrogen due to which they are unable to displace hydrogen from a solution like water.

And that is why, phosphorus, a very reactive non metal is kept in a bottle of water or anything containing only water.
