We know water has max density at 4 degree celcius. So if we heat it or cool it, it will expand.
So when we cool it from 4 degree celcius,its volume increases upto 0 degree celcius. At 0 degree celcius latent heat of fusion converts it to a form of ice. So this ice represents a open crystal structure of hydrogen bond atoms.which is lighter in density than water. This is also the reason why ice floats over the water. Because water is more dense than the water. This is also the reason why sea living being survive in winter when water layer becomes solidify.
The main question is, why on decreasing temp volume increases after 4 degree celcius?On decreasing the temp from 4 degree celcius to 0 degree celcius, molecular bonds becomes weak , so it form a open crystal strucuture of ice at 0 degree after giving latent heat of fusion.( The reason of ice float).
This is the most probable answer….. but the research in this topic is continued…
