When Peter Stockmann enters, his physical appearance helps to reveal that he is thoroughly professional and enjoys the gravity of his position.

EXPLANATION:

In Henry Ibsen’s famous play, ‘An Enemy of the People’, Peter Stockmann is the foil of his idealist doctor brother- Thomas Stockmann. Peter Stockmann is the Mayor of the town. He thoroughly enjoys its position and the associated opportunities it offers in making money even at the expense of the doom of others.

Like a sly hypocrite he dresses in the typical garb of a Mayor. His physical appearance in the opening scene with his overcoat, his official hat and his walking stick creates a pen-portrait of his character as being a man of position and power.
