when phenol is treated with CHCl3 and NaOH the product formed as major is called as ortho hydroxybenzaldehyde. The compound formed as minor is it's para isomar, named para hydroxybenzaldehyde. The product formed as major is also known as salicaldehyde. This is a very important product in biochemistry. This compound is used in preparing medicines or pharmacy. The whole reaction is called as Reimer-Tiemann reaction.
