photorespiration. photorespiration A light-activated type of respiration that occurs in the chloroplasts of many plants. It differs biochemically from normal (dark) respiration in that it involves glycolate metabolism (see GLYCOLATE CYCLE).

Photorespiration occurs when the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is low and the concentration of oxygen (O2) is high. It is resulted because rubisco utilizes oxygen as a substrate instead of carbon dioxide.
