when placed above a current carrying straight wire a compass needle points to the west. But when placed below the same wire the needle points to the east. in which direction is the current flowing in the wire? ​

If electrons flow towards west, the current equivalently move towards east. Hence from right hand thumb rule, the magnetic field above the wire is towards south, which is same direction as that of earth's magnetic field.
