when potassium is allowed to burn in a gas jar of chlorine , in a fume cupboard , clouds of white smoke are produced.why is this reaction carried out in a fume cupboard

The very hazardous and dangerous experiments are carried out in fume cupboard which especially involves burning. Whenever metals like potassium are burnt in chlorine then the fumes produced can be hazardous to the eyes and can cause severe eye irritation or can have harmful effects. Thus, such kind of experiment should be carried out in closed container or fume cupboard which doesn't not let the fumes get mixed with the air.
