The gas which was evolved is

Carbon-dioxide .

It's molecular formula is CO .

Calcium Hydroxide [Ca(OH)] is known as 'Lime water'.

When Santosh passed Carbon-dioxide gas through Calcium Hydroxide ,white coloured Calcium Carbonate [CaCO₃] and water [H₂O] are formed . The white coloured Calcium Carbonate in water gives the solution a milky appearance.

The balanced chemical equation, for the reaction is :-

Ca(OH) + CO CaCO + HO

Some Extra Information:-

In the above reaction :-

Ca(OH) is a base.

CO is an acid [acidic gas]

CaCO is a salt.

HO is water.

Thus, we can infer that it is a neutralization reaction as an acid and base are reacting to form salt and water.
