when sodium a metal is added to water it reacts vigorously to form two new substances- sodium hydroxide and a colorless gas which extinguishes a lighted splint with a pop sound? What brought about chemical reaction?

Since hydrogen cannot exist independently in the atmosphere, two hydrogen atoms from two water molecules forms a hydrogen molecule.
