When a solution of silver nitrate is added to a solution of sodium chloride, the silver ions combine with the chloride ions to form a precipitate of silver chloride. The sodium and the nitrate ions are nonparticipating spectator ions.

Answer:

Explanation:

When silver nitrate (AgNO

3

) reacts with sodium chloride (NaCl) a white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) is formed which is highly insoluble in water, along with formation of sodium nitrate (NaNO

3

).

Since (AgCl) is insoluble in water it will precipitate out and (NaNO

3

) is soluble in water so it will remain dissolved in the mixture. This reaction is an example of double displacement reaction and it occurs as follows:-

AgNO

 + NaCl→AgCl + NaNO
