When ammonium hydroxide NH4OH is added to the dropwise in the sulphate solution the copper ion Cu2+ reacts with the 2 molecules of ammonia. The copper reacts to form copper hydroxide. Copper hydroxide is a hydroxide of copper and a pale blue-greenish precipitate is formed.

A pale blue precipitate of copper hydroxide is formed which is found to be insoluble in excess sodium hydroxide solution.
