Metals like sodium react violently with water as it is a highly reactive metal. In case of sodium the reaction is so violent and exothermic, that evolved hydrogen immediately catches fire.

Hope this helps you. ..

Sodium is a highly reactive metal. Sodium reacts with water due to its melting point. It reacts with water because it is more reactive and active than hydrogen.Sodium reacts vigorously with water and immediately catches fire. And it is an exothermic reaction. So sodium catches fire when reacted with water.
