The gas evolved is ethane.

Equation:

                                             CaO

C(2)H(5)COONa + NaOH ------> C(2)H(6) + Na(2)CO(3).

    This reaction proceeds with the application of heat; this type of reaction in which CO(2) molecule is removed from a carboxylic acid is called decarboxylation.

prabal1035: But what is the molecular weight?
