when a spring is stretched , longitudinal tension is developed .

A restoring force acts on the spring as we pull it which is in the direction opposite to its displacement .

hence it experiences longitudinal tension

yadavakilesh2074: but what about it expands laterally also so doesn't it experience lateral strain at all...actually one professor told me that when this question is asked most people answer longitudnal but it is lateral and while solving ncert exemplar answer was both longitudnal as wellas lateral so I was confused which is correct?
maria9: even I was confused ... there will be lateral tension
yadavakilesh2074: in which std are you now?
