It floats by virtue of two important factors:
1)The hull is watertight, preventing water from entering through the skin. Even if the top of the hull is open, that’s fine. There must be no holes in the side or bottom to allow ingress of water. So, watertight? Yes? Good.
2)Water is far denser than atmospheric air.
