When sugar is dissolved in water the volume of water remains the same why?

sugar gets divided into very small fragment or molecules and as there is spaces between the molecules of water , the sugar gets into that space..

because of properties of solution (here water is solvent ,sugar is solute and solute +solvent-solution).
I hope it is correct.
