when sugar is dissolved in water there is no increase in volume

no there is no increase in volume as the sugar molecules stick to the water molecules

According to the property of matter - Particles of matter have space between them. So when we dissolve some amount of sugar in water , the particles of sugar disperse between the space present in the particles of water and there is no change in the volume of water.
