They increase in energy and split apart.
Example: You have a Solid ice cube. The atoms are still, but vibrating just a tiny bit. When you add heat, that allows them to be more free. Your ice is now water. The atoms are moving around, but bump into each other. Add even more heat and your water is now a gas. The atoms are zooming past each other and rarely bump into each other.
