Hey mate!!!!!
The acceleration is taken as negative if it is working in the direction opposite to the velocity.
For ex, if we throw a ball up, then the acceleration of gravity will pull it down which means in opposite direction so it is negative.
Second example If we apply brakes, the acceleration works in opposite and hence the vehicle stops so it is also negative.
Hope it helps dear friend ☺️✌️✌️✌️

When the acceleration is in the opposite direction of the motion the acceleration is said to be negative.
For e. g. -
if a car is moving at at 2 m/s then in 2 seconds its velocity decreases to 4 m/s then the acceleration will be -1 m/s.
