when the concentrated solution of an acid is diluted by mixing water, then the concentration of hydrogen ions per unit volume decreases. Why?​

  • When the concentrated solution of an acid is diluted by mixing water, then the concentration of hydrogen ions per unit volume decreases because on dilution the overall volume of solution increases and so the number of hydronium ions per unit volume decreases.
  • Also, the H+ ions of the acid and hydroxyl ions of water react to form water molecules and thus, the concentration of hydronium ions decreases.

        H+ + H2O  ----> H3O+

        H+ + OH- -----> H2O
