When the current is switched on through a wire, a compass needle kept nearby gets deflected from its north - south position, Explain.

when a current is switched on through a wire the wire act as n electromagnet and the compass needle shows deflection but when we switch off the current the compass needle does not deflect because the wire is not acting like a electromagnet
