MGNREGA was originally launched as NREGA on 2nd February, 2006 by an Act of Parliament. It was later renamed Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee scheme. It is an Indian labour law and a measure of social security, which guarantees the right to work, with poverty alleviation as its overriding objective.
