They did not disclose their problems to the narrator they considered that the problems were their own and they were dealing with them in their own way. Their brotherly love, maturity and the belief in between them were so strong that they didn't want anyone's consent or any sort of interference in their personal matters.

The boys were reluctant to disclose their problem to the narrator when he asked them about their plans because they didn't want to lose their dignity and self respect by asking anyone for sympathy or financial help
