Because they don't wanted anyone to interfere in there life and they also don't wanted to give any problem to the narrator .......

As these boys did a sort of odd- jobs but narrator was reluctant to know about their plans perhaps migrating to America..But boys didnot want to disclose their plans as they donot want to get someone sympathy.
