acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity
retardation is just negative acceleration, it is also called as deceleration
----------------------------------
if the final velocity is greater than the initial velocity then we say that body is having acceleration.
if the final velocity is less than the initial velocity then we say that the body is having retardation

The rate of change in velocity of a body is said to Acceleration. In this case, The Final Velocity of a body is greater than Initial Velocity.
The rate of change of velocity of a body with, when the velocity is decreasing is called Retardation.
For better concept,
In general, the moving bodies do not have uniform velocity. Either the velocity of a moving body increases or decreases with time. For example - A cyclist moving through a busy street has a variable velocity. When his velocity is increasing, he is said to be accelerating. Conversely, when his velocity decreasing, he is said to be retarding.
