Explanation:

Evolution of Carbon dioxide gas in the reaction of calcium carbonate and dilute acid can be tested by passing it( the gas evolved ) through a solution of quick lime that is calcium oxide. if the quicklime turns milky in colour by passing off carbon dioxide then the test is positive. lime water solution turns milky due to to the formation of calcium carbonate .

the following chemical equation describes the above reaction:-

CaO ( aq ) + CO2 ( g) = CaCO3 ( s) .
