The temperature of the lamp increases gradually and the metallic sodium of vaporizes and then ionizes there by producing the monochromatic yellow light. This lamp takes 10-15 min to give its full light output. The yellowish output of the lamp makes the object appears gray.

When the lamp is the first turned on the sodium is not properly vaporised yet. Instead of it is effectively a low light neon or argon light with some red from the neon, and the some violet from the Argon. The combination of these two colours creates , pink light.
