When the teacher divided the students into 5 groups of 4 each ,one student was left out. When they were divided into 4 groups of five each then also one student was left out. What is the total number of students?

so number of student in 5 groups = 4 × 5 = 20

Total student = number of student in 5 groups + student left out

                      = 20 + 1 = 21

checking by second scenario

number of student in 1 group = 5

so number of student in 4 groups = 5× 4 = 20

Total student = number of student in 5 groups + student left out

                      = 20 + 1 = 21

Hence total number of student = 21
