When the traffic light turns green, a car moves
with a constant acceleration 2 m/s^2. At the same
time a truck moving with a constant speed
10 m/s, overtakes and passes the car.
(1) How far beyond the starting point will the
overtake the truck?

Answer:

Step 1: Given

For car:

Acceleration(a₁)= 2 ms2

Intial velocity(u₁)=0 m/s

For truck:

Truck is moving with uniform velocity,

Hence, initial velocity(u₂)= final velocity(v₂)= 10 m/s

Let the distance covered by the car and truck be S₂ and S₁.

Step 2: Formula used

s=ut+1/2at2

Step 3: Finding the time and distance to overtake

At the time of overtake

Distance covered by car = Distance covered by truck

S₁ = S₂

u₂*t=12a₁*t2

10*t=12*2*t2

t=10 sec

Distance covered by the car or truck(S₁ = S₂) =u*t=100 m

Hence, the graph will be,
