When they arrived at the museum, Tyler’s dad went to the ticket counter. For each of the 5 members of
the family, he purchased a general admission ticket for $8.75 and a ticket to see a special exhibit. He paid
a total of $70. How much did each ticket to the special exhibit cost?

Tyler and his family had lunch at the museum cafeteria. Each person ordered a sandwich that cost the
same amount, and they got $5 off their entire purchase with proof of admission to the special exhibit. If
they paid a total of $35 after the discount, how much did each sandwich cost?

Given:

PART A

No. of members in Tyler's family = 5

Cost of general admission ticket = $8.75

Total Cost of tickets = $70

PART B

Discount on total cost of sandwiches = $5

The total cost of sandwiches = $35

To Find:

PART A

Cost of each ticket to the special exhibit.

PART B

Cost of each sandwich.

Solution:

PART A

  • For solving this question, let us assume the cost of each ticket to the special exhibition is $x.
  • According to the question, 5 general admission tickets and 5 special exhibit tickets were bought.

               ⇒  5(8.75) + 5x = 70

               ⇒  43.75 + 5x = 70

               ⇒  5x = 26.25

               ⇒   x = 5.25

∴ Each special exhibit ticket costs $5.25.

PART B

  • For solving this question, let the cost of each sandwich be $y.
  • According to the question, $5 were discounted from the total cost.

             ∴ Actual total cost = $35 + $5 = $40

  • Now let us form an equation based on the given situation.

                              ⇒  5y = 40

                              ⇒  y = 8

∴ Every sandwich costs $8.

Hence,  each ticket to the special exhibit cost $5.25 and each sandwich costs $8.
