actually m1:m2 is the section formula whereas, if the ratio is not given in the problem we should take m1 as k & m2 as 1 to find the ratio.

k:1 is used when you don't have ratio in the question– for e.g See the above picture
m1:m2 is used when ratio is given.
m1:m2 is used when ratio is given.
