The difference between “ki” and “kī” is something that often baffles newcomers to Hindi, albeit less than the genders of different nouns! ;)

“की” (kī) indicates possession or some other relationship between the nouns situated before and after it in a sentence.

Example: “मैं राजनीति की बात कर रहा हूँ।” I am speaking of/about politics.

“रजनी की गुड़िया बहुत सुंदर है।” Rajni’s doll is very beautiful.

“कि” (ki) on the other hand is roughly equivalent to “that” in English, and is elaborative in its usage. It is usually used to expand or add detail to the activity of a subject - generally in reported speech.

“उन्होंने कहा कि आप आ गए हैं।” He said that you have arrived.

“मैंने सोचा कि आप बहरे हैं।” I thought that you’re deaf.

Hope this is unambiguous. I will add more examples if required.
