Explanation:

When two magnets are brought together, the opposite poles will attract one another, but the like poles will repel one another. This is similar to electric charges. Like charges repel, and unlike charges attract. Since a free hanging magnet will always face north, magnets have long been used for finding direction.

When two magnets are placed near each other, they can attract each other or repel each other based on two possible situation :

  • When same poles (north pole of one magnet are placed near north pole of another magnet), are kept near then, magnets repel each other because like poles repel each other.
  • When opposite poles (north-south pair) of two magnets are kept near each other, then, magnets attract each other as unlike pole attract each other.

Hence, when magnets are kept near each other either they will attract or repel.
