When two resistances R1 and R2 are connected in parallel, the net

resistance is 3 ohm. When connected in series, its value is 6 ohm.

Calculate the values of: R1 and R2.​

R1+R2=16Ω....................1 In parallel connection

R=R1R2/ R1+R2 Or R1R2/R1+R2=3Ω...............2 Or

R1R2/16=3..........(from 1) Or

R1R2=48 OR R1(16-R1)=48 OR 16R1-R1²=48 OR R1²-16R1+48=0 Using quadratic formula

R1=12 or R1=4

Hence the required resistances are 12Ω and 4 Ω
