When universal indicator is dropped separately in acetic acid and hydrochloric acid taken in a test tube then yellowish pink and pink colour is formed. Compare the pH of dilute acetic acid and dilute hydrochloric acid and discuss the result with reference to ionisation of each in solution.

Yellowish pink colour denotes a pH of around 6 of acetic acid, where as pink (red) denotes a pH below 4 for HCl. This indicates that acetic acid is a weaker acid than HCl.
