When Vietnam got divided and how?
Answers
From 1954 to 1975 Vietnam was divided into two countries.
In 1954 the Viet Minh defeated France at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which ended French rule of Indochina. Lawmakers at the Geneva Convention produced the Geneva Accords which divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. This was supposed to be a temporary demarcation line that would keep the French and Viet Minh military forces at bay until a demilitarized zone was created by mutual withdrawal of forces. Additionally, the division afforded Vietnamese civilians the option of relocating to either side of the 17th parallel if they chose to do so. Vietnam was to be reunified in 1956 by nationwide elections, however US lawmakers had other ideas and plans that kept the country divided until 1975.
