The British came to India on the pretext of business and touristic visits during the 17th Century...ie., in 1600s..
During the 18th century (mid) they , "East India Co." started ruling India.

British came to India in 1600 and get the right to trade from the Mughal Emperor of that time, that is, Jahangir or Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim.
