India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. India gained independence on 15th August, 1947 and became a republic on 26th January, 1950.
In a republic, supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives. It also has an elected President as head of state, instead of a Monarch. Therefore, on 26th January, 1950 India completely detached itself from the British Crown, but adopted the Westminster model of Parliamentary Democracy as has been practised in the United Kingdom since time immemorial.
In a diverse country like India, democracy has been and will always be of immense relevance. People of so many religions, linguistic groups, castes, creeds, colour and socio-economic background live in this country. Democracy is the primary glue that keeps us together.
