Explanation:
The Indigo revolt was a peasant movement and subsequent indigo farmers ' uprising against the indigo planters that erupted in 1859 in Bengal. Indigo planting in Bengal dates back to 1777 when it was introduced to the Indians by Louis Bonnard, a Frenchman.
Instead of food crops, the indigo planters convinced the peasants to grow indigo. At a very high interest, they issued loans, named dadon. Once a farmer had taken out such loans, he remained in debt all his life before passing it on to his successors. The price the planters paid was meagre, just 2.5% of the market price. The farmers were unable to make any indigo growing money. The farmers were completely unprotected from the indigo planters who, if they were reluctant to follow them, resorted to mortgages or destruction of their land. Under this oppression, the farmers started a revolt.
